Drafting with AI

Drafting with AI

Writing a game takes a lot of text: welcome messages, questions, quizzes, conversations, items, character profiles, rules. Drafting with AI lets a language model write a first version for you from a short description, or from a text you paste (a museum label, a page about the place). You then review it, change what you like, and save it as usual.

You stay the author. Nothing is saved for you: every draft is put into the element's form, unsaved, and you press Save once you have checked it.

⚠️

A model writes fluently, but it can be wrong: a date, a name, a correct answer, a branch of a conversation that leads to the wrong place. Read every field of a draft before you save it, and check every correct answer of a question or quiz.

Before You Start

Drafting is an optional feature. You will find the Draft with AI buttons only if your Rollick administrator has enabled AI drafting for your game, and only if you can edit the game. It is independent of AI characters: a game can have one, the other, or both.

Drafting uses the game's AI settings: its provider and key, its spending limits, the game brief and the language. It has a model of its own, the one chosen for the task Drafts content (Artifact Creator). If something is missing (no provider, no model, no key), the drafting panel says what, with a button to Open the AI settings.

  • The game brief is given to every draft as background, so a draft fits your game's world and tone. A few good sentences in the brief improve every draft.
  • The language of the AI settings is the language of the drafts, unless you ask for another one in a draft.
  • The audience is filled in from the game's age settings; you can change it per draft.

Drafting a New Element

Open a new info, confirmation, question, quiz or conversation and press Draft with AI.

  1. What should it be about? Describe what you want in a sentence or two, e.g. "A question about the year the lighthouse was built, for players standing in front of it."
  2. Optionally, Add a source text: paste the text the facts and answers should come from (up to 20,000 characters). The model is told to take its facts from it, which makes wrong facts much less likely. The text is sent to the game's AI provider with the request.
  3. Optionally set the Audience (e.g. 10-year-olds), the Tone (e.g. playful) and the Language.
  4. Some types have choices of their own:
    • Question: Best for the content, Multiple choice or Open answer.
    • Quiz: how many questions (up to 20), the kinds of questions, the difficulty, and whether it has an Introduction and an Epilogue.
    • Conversation: the length (Short, 3–5 statements; Medium, 6–10; Long, 11–18), the display (Screens or Chat) and the Speakers, chosen among the game's characters (none chosen: any of them; no characters: the narrator says everything).
  5. Press Draft. It can take up to a minute; Stop waiting gives up on the answer.

The draft is loaded into the form. A note says what the model did, what the request cost, and any problems found in the draft (an error, a warning or a hint, e.g. a question without a correct answer). For a quiz, you first choose which of the drafted questions to keep.

If the element has no system name yet, it gets one: "AI Drafted: " and a short name. You can change it like any other name.

Draft again writes a new draft from the same description, and replaces what the form holds now.

Changing a Draft: the Follow-Up Chat

Under a draft, a small chat lets you ask for changes in plain words: "make it shorter", "more mysterious", "Q3 is too easy", "add an option to haggle". Each request sends the form as it is now, your own edits included, so you can mix hand edits and requests freely.

  • After each answer, the chat says what changed (or Nothing changed.) and any problems.
  • Undo puts the form back as it was before the last change.
  • A chat holds up to 20 requests; then draft again, or start a New chat when refining.

Refine with AI on a saved element opens the same chat without a first draft: the element as it is in the form is the starting point. It keeps the element's system name and, unless you ask otherwise, its language. The small refine boxes (a statement, a part of a quiz, a profile) also offer one-click requests such as Shorter, Friendlier, Add some emoji, Easier, Better wrong options or Another question.

A conversation that contains AI segments is never drafted or changed with AI drafting: edit it by hand. A character's attitude variants and their conditions are never sent nor changed when you refine its profile.

Several Items or Attributes at Once

On the New Item and New Attribute pages, Draft some items with AI (or attributes) drafts up to 10 at a time from one description, e.g. "the three keys of the city gates, each a little different". Each one comes with a title, a description, a system name and an icon from the game's library.

The list lets you edit each title and description, change its icon, and untick the ones you do not want. Nothing is created until you press Create; then the kept ones are created one by one. Images and other settings are set afterwards, in each one's form.

Conditions, Triggers, Actions and Rules

In the builders of the game plot, describe what you want in words and the draft is put into the builder, unsaved:

  • Conditions: "the player has completed the north gate quiz and owns at least 3 keys". The blocks are added after the ones the form has.
  • A rule's trigger: "when the player enters the north gate". It replaces the trigger the form has.
  • Actions: "give the player 2 north gate keys and show the welcome info". They are added after the actions the form has, in order.
  • A whole rule: one description for its trigger, whether it fires once, its conditions, its actions and its "else" actions.

The model can only use the elements your game has (scenes, items, interactions, attributes…), and the builder checks and shows the result exactly as if you had made it by hand. When the form already has something, the button says Refine… and the description starts from what is there, in words, for you to edit. Undo takes the draft out again.

Fixing Plot Check Findings

When the AI review of the Plot Check finds a problem in a text, its card offers Fix with AI. It opens the element with Refine with AI and the request already filled in from the finding. Edit the request if you like, press Send, review the change, and Save.

Cost and Limits

Every request is a call to a model, paid like the rest of the game's AI (by the game owner's key, or by the platform) and counted towards the game's spending limits. The drafting panel shows:

  • Your AI requests today, against your daily allowance (50 by default; an administrator may give you another number);
  • the game's AI spend today and this month against its limits, and the part of it that went to drafting;
  • what each answer cost, next to it.

The numbers turn orange at 80% of a limit and red at 100%. You can have one draft in progress at a time.

What is sent to the AI provider: your description, the source text you paste, the game's title, description and brief, the element as it is in the form, and the game elements a draft may refer to (its characters, and for conditions, triggers, actions and rules its scenes, items, interactions…). No player data is sent.
